FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen in order to get students involved in engineering and technology. FIRST® puts on the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®), in which our team competes.
The FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) is the only competition that places high school students side-by-side with industry professionals to work towards a common goal. This unique interaction aids students in developing a wide variety of technical and non-technical skills. We aim to expose students to opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) through participation in this competition, and inspire them to pursue these opportunities in later life.
Another key part of FIRST® is Gracious Professionalism™. This term was coined by Woodie Flowers (co-founder of FIRST®), and it means that fierce competition and mutual gain can indeed coexist. It's the practice of encouraging professional work, mutual respect, and outreach. The Chairman's Award, the most prestigious award in FIRST®, is awarded every year to the team which best exemplifies these qualities and pursues FIRST®'s mission.
Every year, a new game is released by FIRST®. This year's game is Rebound Rumble™, which can be learned about here. Our goal each year is to design, build, program, and operate a robot that can play the game, and hopefully win! There are also other awards for websites, team image, etc. Of course, all of these are simply ways to acheive the overall FIRST® mission.
